5. You should do what you feel drawn to

There is a misconception in art that many artists fall into. That’s that they need to stick to one way of doing their art. That’s not true. It’s actually very self destructive because we find ourselves fighting our own tendency to explore and our own natural desire to express ourselves. It’s like someone made up some random rules and we have to stick to them or else.

You can have distinctive styles that vary according to your themes or to your response to different media. I, for example, have one style when I draw and a completely different style when I paint. And both are equally important and both are challenging. I have an abstract expressionist style too, but I haven’t posted any of those paintings. I had my large abstract painting phase and while it lasted it consumed me. It was an incredible journey!

Just continue to do what you need to do. What inspires you and what challenges you and learn to be aware that what you do depends on the medium you use. But above all remember to honor your styles, your artistic desires and trust that you’re allowed to follow your dream, your star, your own personal path.

When you feel inspired to do your ink drawings do them. When you need to paint do that, and forget the words “I should” or “I shouldn’t”.
