NEW ORLEANS — It has been two years since Mardi Gras parades have rolled across New Orleans. Parades were canceled in 2020 due to the rise in coronavirus cases. Since then, vaccines have been made available to the public with New Orleans leading the state in vaccination rates. Tidwell said now that coronavirus cases are trending down, the city is looking at getting events back on the fall calendar. However, a decision on Mardi Gras has yet to be made.

"We are not announcing any decision on Mardi Gras this week," said Tidwell. "We will be getting with krewes on an official announcement over the next four to five weeks, and the city remains optimistic," said Tidwell. "We want Mardi Gras to come back, but what happens next depends on what we do right now."

According to Tidwell, mid-October is the deadline for most krewes who are planning parades, and the city is conscious of that timeline. Tidwell said a letter was sent to krewes urging riders on floats to get vaccinated.
