and Irish from the rest of the city threaten to boycott, then they "settle" at the last minute to "allow" them in, their Roman Catholic heritage bowing to the needs of the saloon owners along the route.

This year the Mayor told them to shove their parade.

This sort of thing happened with one group or another the whole time I lived in Boston. I never went to the parade, I avoided Southie on general principles. The Globe always featured pictures of local Italian politicians dressed in green leading it, looking distinctly bilious. Green was not their color.
