Andrew Cuomo's Anger Is Legendary. And It's Powering His Comeback. [View all]
NEW YORK In 2021, as Assemblymember Ron Kim was drawing a bath for his children, his phone rang. It was Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and he was furious. Kim had criticized Cuomos handling of nursing home deaths during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, Cuomo was screaming. He threatened to destroy Kim, a fellow Democrat. He tried to pressure Kim into issuing a public statement and said Kim hadnt seen his wrath, according to Kims later public account. Kim immediately pushed for impeachment legislation against Cuomo, who resigned six months later amid a sexual harassment scandal and a looming effort to remove him from office. Cuomo denies any wrongdoing.
Less than four years later, with Cuomo leading in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary that will take place Tuesday, Kim still hasnt endorsed, but he told The New York Times that hes had a change of heart about his former enemy. Ive always been open to giving people a fair shot, Kim, who declined to comment for this article, said. I want to see, sitting across from him, if hes changed.
Another state lawmaker, granted anonymity by POLITICO Magazine for fear of retribution from Cuomos camp, insists Cuomo hasnt and that his bullying has extended into his current campaign for mayor.
When Cuomo asked directly for an endorsement, the lawmaker said, It sounded like he was on a vengeance campaign
. It didnt sound like this was a campaign focused on working people, but revitalizing the Cuomo brand. Then, after the lawmaker refused to endorse him, the threats started. Cuomos top aides contacted the lawmaker to suggest I would live to regret my decision, the lawmaker said.
