Legislature passes anti-abortion bill after midnight [View all]

The Tennessee Legislature overwhelmingly passed legislation Thursday, June 18, 2020, designed to prohibit abortion, when the Senate took up the measure after midnight even though it was not on the chamber’s priority list.

With a 23-5 vote, the Senate passed Gov. Bill Lee’s legislation, which is designed to stop the procedure once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The move came after state troopers removed pro-choice protesters from the balcony, which was closed to the public.

In a 68-17 vote, the House approved an amended version of Gov. Bill Lee’s legislation, HB2263, designed to stop the procedure when a fetal heartbeat is detected.

The legislation was an apparent bargaining chip the Senate opted to bring up in negotiating a budget with the House.
