Houston and Harris County leaders blast widespread suspension of voter registrations, urge residents to check their stat [View all]
At a Thursday morning press conference, the City of Houston and Harris County elected leaders blasted the suspension of more than 2 million voters from the state's voter rolls.
The press conference came days after Gov. Greg Abbott announced more than 1 million people had been removed from voter rolls for a variety of reasons, including thousands of Texans who were placed on a "suspense list" and failed to rectify the issue.
"Election integrity is essential to our democracy," Abbott said in a Monday press release announcing the purge. "We will continue to actively safeguard Texans' sacred right to vote while also aggressively protecting our elections from illegal voting."
Houston City Council Member Abbie Kamin described the timing of the purge as "extremely problematic."
