Democrat Glenda Ritz beat-out school "reform" champion Tony Bennett to win the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction, receiving more votes than the winning gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence (R), clearly sending a message that Hoosiers do not approve of the direction that Indiana's Department of Education is heading in. The next day, however, Pence announced that he has no intention to change any of the policies that were pushed through by Tony Bennett, claiming that Hoosiers clearly approve of the direction their IDOE has been heading in since they voted for him. Concerned teachers and parents alike fear that the republican majority in the Indiana Statehouse will make Ritz's position an appointed position before the next election, to prevent a non-"reformer" from heading the office again.
