I took it for anxiety so I could get to sleep. No side effects, not addictive (at least for me and my dad). I took it before it was a controlled substance in the 90s.

I had about 4 panic attacks and what stopped them right away was breathing into a bag for a few minutes. It regulates the breathing and it worked well for me. A paper bag or even a plastic one held over your mouth and nose and inhale deeply.
