which likewise seems hard to believe. But the latter case hasn't (apparently?) been questioned so...?

I think this only underscores our frustration that our beloved pups don't live longer...But, as more humans are developing colon and other cancers much earlier in life and lifespan is dropping in the industrialized countries, there is biologic plausibility for why that should be the case in our dogs, despite the care we often can deliver.
