3. Hearing about the cold for years, I still couldn't imagine it.

It was kind of a running joke in our family...nothing was ever as cold as Belgium in '44 / '45.

Dad, some of his friends, my maternal uncles all seemed normal. From the outside you'd never guess what they been through. Amazing what humans can do when they have to. 101st had little to zero winter gear since they were still in rest and refit after Market Garden. Those guys really suffered. Dad was in the 30th ID and had some winter gear but were also off the line, recovering from the battle for Aachen when the bulge started.
