The man wanted to do the thing and live to bask in its glory. He hadn't the willingness to do or die he, as an officer, expected of any twenty-year old kid facing a pillbox with two friends dead beside him. If he'd detonated the thing opening it on the tabletop, instead of setting it down and walking away, he'd have got his target.
