Washington state marijuana initiative certified, sent to Legislature [View all]

An initiative that would decriminalize use and possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults was sent to the Legislature on Friday after the Secretary of State’s office certified it has more than enough signatures. A signature check by the State Elections Division, using a random sample, determined that sponsors had nearly 278,000 valid signatures, well in excess of the 241,153 required.

The initiative, I-502, would create a system of state-licensed growers, processors and stores, and impose a 25 percent excise tax at each stage. Those 21 and over could buy up to an ounce of dried marijuana; one pound of marijuana-infused product in solid form, such as brownies; or 72 ounces of marijuana-infused liquids.

The Legislature now can do one of the following things: pass the pot decriminalization measure as is, reject or ignore the measure and let it go to the ballot in Nov., or pass an alternative to put on the ballot alongside the original..
