My best friend was killed in Nam the last week of April in 1970, but the May 1 date sticks out to me. That is the day I got home after my Freshman year of college to be met by my Mother bawling her eyes out at the front door with the news.
My son, who is now 33, is named after him. I had already turned from a young Goldwater Republican to an anti-war protester during my first year, but this news pushed me over the line into full-blown radicalism.
What a waste, and what a shame that assholes like Trump now use the military to bolster their undemocratic agendas.
