I think the specialist would be an orthopedic person. Do you already have one of those on your list? If not, call GP to get a referral, or your rheumatologist would probably have a good one.

In the meantime, I'd be wrapping it, elevating it, icing it, and staying off of it as much as possible.

I wouldn't wait long on this. You don't want it to get more confused than it already is.

Yes, I moved wrong one day picking something up off the floor and now if I'm doing anything active (e.g. gardening, cleaning, walking) I wear an elastic knee brace that just reminds my knee, "Don't do that again!"
