Because they didn't want their kids to miss the opportunity to live among people who are not exactly like them.
In Acri - they are all Calabrese.
On Gleason Ave - My mother-in-law learned how to cook soul food, Arroz Con Pollo, Quindum, and Poule in Sauce.
She brought Shepherds Pasta, Calabrese Grape Leaves and Lamb stew to the potluck.
When you live so close to people that you can't help but communicate, in a neighborhood of Black Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, and immigrants from Haiti, Brazil . . . you become lifelong friends.
All five of those kids are the people they are because their parents never wanted them to be comfortable, snobby, or think that the color of their skin should entitle them to anything - ANYWHERE in the world.
