My grandson was chosen to play on a hockey development team, with AA certified coaches at age 9, only one age group as a trial for the province and could well go on to play Jr, if he keeps it up. I also have a granddaughter (12) who is playing tier 1 boys hockey this year. I worry for them both of them as they get older in this sport and especially if they continue on this high level path. I used to billet Jr A players and one of them told me a bit about the hazing he had to endure, as a new team member ( he just turned 17) but he would not tell me everything, saying it was just so gross. It was during a road trip and on the bus, coaches were on the bus with them. I was shocked to hear that the coaches allowed this shit, I do know if the owner found out they would have been gone, winning team or not. My billet made me promise not to repeat what he told me to the owner or his parents. He got a 4 year full scholarship to Boston College and is a very well balanced man now, with a family of his own but I do know he does not push his sons to play hockey.
