Some conservative Evangelicals still believe that a wife is her husband's chattel, and that he has a duty to use corporal punishment on wife and children when "necessary." At one time, European and many other traditional societies considered this point of view to be "natural." In Japanese society, neither Judeo-Christian nor Moslem, this was once a given. Even in the Kpelle tribe of Liberia, among whom I lived for two years, this was the traditional point of view. They were animists.
