Odd use of "maroon".


leave (someone) trapped and isolated in an inaccessible place, especially an island


In this case they're still in the same place, but the accessibility has changed. Like saying that somebody's no longer marooned on an island without a boat because somebody built a bridge. Not the usual change of circumstances you expect.
