1. Moral panic of satanism has been around at least as long as Christianity

It's not quite as popular these days, but it basically involved convincing people that satan was right around the corner and their only hope was the church. People saw satan everywhere. Rock music was associated with devil worship and jazz before that. Pretty much all of this kind of shit unsurprisingly originated with conservative Christians. It quite often included vast conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic elements. You can find evidence of it in McCarthyism. Geraldo Rivera allegedly found millions of satanic cult members across the US.
