"Candy" (1968) is the most star studded cult film you've never seen. [View all]

It was summer of '69 and I was just 16. After a long day of hanging out with my hippie friends at the Courthouse Square playing folk music and ending the war, I took a solo walk downtown. As I passed the old Robins Theater I noticed the marque above featured "Candy" starring Ringo Starr. Curiosity and Beatlemania won out over the dollar in my pocket so I went in.

I never forgot that movie that starred people I really didn't even know at the time. It's about a young girl played by Swedish model Ewa Aulin who sets out on a bizarre trek that brought her to an insane cast of characters and reveals her budding sexuality to all of them. (Rated R Brief Nudity Adult Situations)

The tongue in cheek satire was based on a book by Terry Southern (Dr Strangelove, The Magic Christian) with screenplay by the inimitable Buck Henry (The Graduate, Catch 22).

I ended up watching the whole thing again today.

Starring:

Charles Aznavour
Marlon Brando
Richard Burton
James Coburn
John Huston
Walter Matthau
Ringo Starr
Ewa Aulin
John Astin
Elsa Martinelli
Sugar Ray Robinson
Anita Pallenberg
Florinda Bolkan
Marilù Tolo
Nicoletta Machiavelli
Umberto Orsini
Joey Forman
Fabian Dean
Enrico Maria Salerno

Also noteworthy is a part for Rolling Stones muse Anita Pallenberg as the evil nurse Bullock.

Take a break from Elon and his puppet for 90 minutes.
