The Lakers and Clippers had a coin flip to determine the first pick for 1982. Ralph Sampson was interested in coming out a year early, but only if the Lakers got the first pick, but Jerry Buss was willing to move up the coin flip before Sampson’s deadline to declare.

James Worthy would’ve been a Clipper. If they won the first pick, Sampson would’ve stayed in school and taken Worthy. Or, the Lakers could’ve gotten Sampson and the Clippers taken Worthy, but Donald Sterling refused.

Terry Cummings was a good player, but he wasn’t James Worthy or even Ralph Sampson. Showtime would’ve looked different, maybe even might’ve ended sooner, given Sampson’s injury problems if he was a Laker.
