(3,699 posts)That said, I still believe the research from Erica Chenoweth and their research partner studying around 350 political resistance movements from 1900 to 206. Nonviolent resistance mass movements are more than twice as effective as armed rebellion is in overturning authoritarian governments.
In those they studied, the nonviolent movements that reached and sustained 3.5 percent of the population in active resistance for an average of two and a half years succeeded in replacing their dictator nonviolently. The leadership of the most successful movements included many women in various significant roles in high numbers. Those that failed were male-dominated. Factors that seemed to help was the connections women tend to bring and sustain, which helped grow the movements to those impressive numbers.
Violent movements tend to lose popular support and not gain the numbers to succeed.
That said, being prepared for self-defense is smart.
