Was because of investment, maintenance and progress. The North invested and built the transcontinental railroad ( which the Soutth did not want ) and that allowed the North to get men and supplies to the front faster and the injured to care faster.

Same thing today. DEI is progressive and MAGA and trump want to regress and never invest in needed maintenance.
