5. Don't blame non-voters. Go after them!

The political system is broken, and blame should be focused on those who broke it: Republicans. And probably on the founding fathers who tried their best but were too content with an aristocracy.

Things aren't so simple any more. The Republican establishment already collapsed and far-right populism took over. The Democratic establishment is weakening and sometimes mis-calculating. Shifting media and generational change make traditional politics difficult. Outright cheating from the Republicans cause an even greater disadvantage.

In a massive country like the current US, building an informal coalition is very difficult. It might be useful to drop the notion of the "true" Democrat and view all voters as potential coalition partners. We need to offer people something to get their votes. Offer an effective progressive agenda and a vision of the country that attracts voters, and try to reconcile divisions caused by wedge issues. Don't ignore any realistic coalition partner and assume they will just be forced to vote for Democrats. The Democratic Party is not a tribe, religion or identity. Don't expect loyalty. Appeal to reason.
