He could get three -four hours in from 7000 until 1000 or 1100 fairly comfortably, take a lunch nap, then "hold court" at the air conditioned clubhouse until 4pm when his supper schedule starts
Elderly people tend to handle a greater amount of heat as long they've got shade and water than the more middle aged.
Not that the same amount of excessive heat won't kill them just as quickly, the elderly tend to prefer a warmer environment and don't notice it's getting excessively hot as quickly as a younger person would.
