there isn't a nefarious explanation behind it all, who knows, but this has happened to me more than several times. They call it getting "bumped". Those jerks overbook flights and count on a certain percentage of people not showing up. If everyone does show up, someone has to get bounced. The tickets are paired with the purchase and they will treat it as a party, so if there are two people and only one seat left, both will get bumped. It really should be illegal, it's highly inconvenient when it happens.
