I was amazed at the quality, variety and low prices of their restaurants, places that may or may not still exist, like The Eclectic, The Mexican Hat Dance, and the castle-like Excaliber, where I mustered the Dutch courage to perform karaoke ("In the Year 2525" ) on a huge stage before a diverse and generous crowd. It seemed to me that the Chicago cityscape was just as sophisticated and aspirational as New York but with less crowded sidewalks.
