I erred and wrote "base." I own that mistake. As noted in Salon today, it is not a "base," but a "military training facility." And, as noted above, it has been done before with allied nations, as with Singapore. Hegseth refers to our relationship with Qatar is a "partnership," which likely applies to a select group of US citizens.

The US, as noted, has allowed close allies to have a military training here. Heck, we all remember Central American military were trained at the School of the Americas to make Ronald Reagan's dream of bringing democracy to the region. Oscar Romero was a terrible threat -- at least to a select group of Americans -- and those trained military might not have been able to murder him while he was saying mass for and with peasants without that training.
