In reply to the discussion: Walmart Set To Lose Billions From SNAP Benefits Stopping in November [View all]FBaggins
(28,547 posts)40. The author makes many mistakes
He lives in the UK and he's just out of school (where he majored in politics and international relations... not economics) - so we should cut him some slack. But this is oversimplified beyond much value.
As you say - can he just asssume that SNAP recipients will stop buying food? The expectation is that recipients will be reimbursed the full amount once the government reopens. And what about the $6Billion/month that gets spent at other grocery stores? What if those SNAP recipients choose to offset their pain by shopping at cheaper stores (actually driving business TO walmart)?
And some states are covering SNAP payments (at least at first) when the federal taps dry up.

Why the idea that billionaires corporations oligarchs only motivation is money is too simplistic.

Start hitting the big boy oligarchs in the wallet and we'll see either a budget or stop-gap spending measure real quick.

Those denying benefits spend more on one lunch than SNAP participants receive in a month.
