I wasn’t old enough to be allowed to go to a real concert yet but I’d played his album from the Monterrey Pop Festival endlessly and he was coming to our college (next door) so couldn’t stop me. He played almost note for note, plus a shit ton of other things I was familiar with, so it was pretty cool.

Meanwhile, my brother was allowed to hitchhike cross country after his junior year and saw all the great bands—jumped the stage in Boulder to kiss Janis, saw the Doors, the Mothers, Country Joe, and others in SF, and finally came home after he’d been taken in by the Hell’s Angels and a biker chick insisted she pierce his ear with a knitting needle with an infection ensuing and he called for help getting home in a hurry. The news broke about the Manson murders just a couple weeks after he got home—and yes, he dodged a bullet there as he’d somehow wound up on the periphery. Hard to be pissed off at the fact that he had such freedom when it could’ve turned out so badly.
