(435 posts)5th Dimension at Ball State in 1972 or '73. I was still in high school.
The most incredible concert I ever went to was the "1st Ohio River Festival". University of Cincinnati, August 3, 1975. Nippert Stadium. Tickets were $9.00.
Bands included Aerosmith, Black Oak Arkansas, Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Styx. I got these band names from a poster, not from memory, though I do remember some more than others.
If you read the article I found about it, you will learn why there was never a second Ohio River Festival. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to put in a link to the page. My parents never learned that I went - especially since I went with 3 or 4 friends who were guys. My parents were out of town and my brothers didn't tell them.
I remember some of the stuff reported in the article, but nothing about violence. There was a fence that was torn down, and some people got in that way. I saw that, but none of the "security people's " over-the-top actions. There were people vomiting all over the place. Drugs were being sold out in the open as if they were hot dogs, with the sellers calling the name of their wares to people walking by. One of my friends and I ended up watching the whole event from the outside, where the fence was knocked down. Behind, but to the right of the stage. We could see everything on the stages from pretty close. And, we sat in the shadow of giant air conditioning units for a very close school building that threw out cooling mist, making it probably the most comfortable place in the whole area.
That was probably the closest I ever got to feeling like a hippie. I'm pretty sure that none of my nieces and nephews know that I was that "cool", or at least thought I was.
