I know that amputees have phantom pain, I can't even imagine what a cat feels. Years ago, a neighbor did it to their manx cat, who traditionally already have medical issues. After have her toes were removed she stopped using the litter box and they made her stay out side most of the day. They didn't see the connection, always bragged about having manx cat, though.
