-the hardiest among us made it up there, and those flying in from elsewhere missed out as Estes was essentially closed off for a couple of days. The Stanley was at the end of its usual season and was due to close after our conference for renovations, so staffing was pretty minimal. We essentially had the place to ourselves, and I admittedly joined two others doing a fully UNOFFICIAL tour of the Stanley--including corridors and rooms not open to the public. So, I got to experience Stanley like King did-- only with his movie in the back of my mind. It was quite the experience. Really!

The place is beautiful, but if your imagination was running wild, well...
