68. Misconduct, Malpractice, Stalking and Harassment Allegations

If I had to explain myself to my main mentor, one of the most positive external influences in my life, I would say that 90% of my thoughts day to day have always been about how I will become employable in science work.
Plain fare science work. My mentor was and is still no doubt a people person.

What that means is that he facilitates his mentees (postdoctoral and students) in becoming as competent at science as is possible.
I do like science. I found my field (biophysics) late in life and privatized education in an EECS dept in the US in 2000-2001 misappropriated at least 25 k, maybe up to 35 k from me without providing any meaningful education.

I do think it is disgraceful to take that much money from students from the global south and not invest any effort into seeing that students who are not learning are not cheated out of their tuition money. I stumbled into a biophysics lab with a decent enough mentor. He was a good mentor, just personality wise less involved than my mentor. But he was cool and the work was really cool and there was no industrial influence to suppress thinking and force hustle. That is not at all the same as a hippie farm.
What it means is that one has enough space to think and learn. My metacognition was poor those days so I was very much a plodder who would keep repeating the same actions over and over and accepting the low yield forward movement that comes from only thinking about the actual problem (whatever it was) and not if I was using work or learning strategies that made sense.

I am only of average intelligence. Though I think I am of average intelligence. Without instruction there is no way I can figure out faster. I do learn. So overtime I will figure out with guidance what I am doing wrong.

But that is the problem with seeing patients and students only as cash cows or political plants to move around like nodes in a network. It won’t lead anywhere worthwhile for anyone.

I do think about things other than my employability - I have worried about the state of the planet since I first came to the US and realized with shock about a year after I found my feet adequately in my first lab that nothing seemed sustainable and it is math.

There was no way this kind of disregard for the planet could work. The one and only close and real friend I made in grad school (I have no objection to people, but superficiality has never appealed to me so I have a few but robust ties. Even here I am mostly a hatrack fan. It is not anything else, but I feel socially overloaded even faster than any other kind. If I get into a bus, I usually hope no one sits next to me as now I will have to keep up a patter of small talk.)
But as importantly as I take that, I have never seen anything but voting and donating as any contribution I could make seriously. I do take politics seriously and like the first grad student in my postdoc lab, I found this journalist Yasha Levine very helpful and DU’s EarlG is the rare human being who can operate a forum with many that I could engage with recognising the challenges of the medium but trusting the admin to be decent. It is not easy I can see handling these many clashing personalities.

But I am not a clashing personality. My behavior was extremely aberrant in the period between Dec 2011 and May 17, 2026.

Usually if something looks somewhat combustible overall I try to stay away. But I did want to retain my sovereignty I suppose.

My last mentor’s work looked incomprehensible. Because it didn’t seem like hard science alone. And I suspect that I would find the solutions that the type of dominant, irresponsible industries these days come up with outright wrong, irresponsible and of too low a quality to be trusted.

I never really got to know my last mentor. I remember liking him when I met him at BPS. I thought he seemed cool. And he probably is. But in context at the school, I would never risk such a place or such stuff. Especially having experienced EECS.

I have many failures and contradictions unheard of in human history. But they are not very lurid. It would be degrading to say this except as a rebuke to my last institution which was run in a way that I consider uncivilised. I was in the process of splitting up from my ex husband, who is my one other close friend to this date. There was never any infidelity or violence etc.

I have a very low opinion of these methods in data and ai. The purpose of reading employee emails etc is that if there is a red flag like gun violence (I do not think spurious notions of self harm and petty fraud are enough to violate human privacy email, let alone anything this invasive or extractive).

People are not “suckers” or naive. I think that is called the system of trust that is of course never extended to some, but should have been the bare minimum for university or hospital admins and the state.
Where there is absolutely no serious rationale collecting volumes of data unnecessarily would make the job of people who do shut predict gun violence (I met exactly one person - a male scientist- at my last institution who seemed to have any appreciation of why one might do these things) or violence harder.
It would make it harder for doctors who are honest as well.

The human ability to parse what is meaningful in large reems of data requires honesty.
This would not even lead to industries that produce anything people actually want as Ed Zitron points out.
I pick up patterns out of the few things I follow - Quanta Magazine, Current Affairs, Yasha Levine, Chris Ketcham, Ed Zitron, Salon Magazine (recently Forward Magazine) and some others I have referenced in the past. And of course DU. The only ai scientist I have seriously paid attention to was Yan LeCun and I have followed DAIR. I have also found Lucien Greaves, Matt Stoller, Nandita Bajaj, Tejas Thackeray, Andy Nikiforuk, Hemanth Kappanna and some others helpful to note or follow occasionally over the years. And as a weak tie a vegan lady locally. I dislike not attributing useful influences. Because I do follow politics and human sociopolitics to make sense of the world and avoid things.

As I am filing targeted misconduct, malpractice and harassment and fraud allegations about most of the period from 2012 to the present. This was a huge strain on me and had absolutely not positives - it depleted my resources and was a strain on my oncologist and mom and dad and I lost my mom. She was on a drug called Medford

The only useful medications I found were DIY- Modafinil from a small family pharmacy we have known for over 20 years and a very responsible pharmacist (as opposed to the kinds of corrupt rubber stamps and theatre of strictness I saw at the institution I was at in 2012 and the corrupt and greedy hospital where my mom died. The doctors (with the exception of 3 psychiatrists from Dec 2012 and Feb 2022) in this state are decent and competent. The hospitals are corrupt and greedy.
I have shockingly for me as largely used to systems where the sleaziness of EECS aside there was nothing alarming, even faced sexual harassment in the period between 2010 and the present. I absolutely avoid all contact with anything run like this as sexual harassers and frauds would proliferate and the not indecent people would not really do much.

I am myself not good at policing etc. It is why I go to the police. The one industry here I do support other than a few vegan and clean food small businesses is medical marijuana and the doctors working with the state and regulators and the industry. They provide a genuinely useful product convenient.
That convenience is lost when rubber stamps and the kinds of corrupt and criminal misogynists who continue to disgracefully come into this location - it is stressful and unsafe and threatening.

Marijuana legalization coupled with such trash will never succeed. And so I am filing all applicable malpractice, misconduct, fraud and harassment complaints I can.
There is no misconduct in my work. I ignore things like RetractionWatch and people like Elizabeth Bik. The real concern here is the industrial influence. And encroaching nonsense with fraudulent rot about cleaning etc.
A new govt came and if they do this and force this illicit construction, they will also be charged with exploitation.
This should be shut down entirely and all the people involved kept under observation.

I am not saying it haughtily. It is common sense. Facebook, Google, Palantir, Musk’s industries etc are just corrupt and low rent.
It is not good politics but theatre to focus less on the fact that this sort of poor hygiene and the attempt to spin off stuff based on engagement with people like me who are not princesses or Karens
Were I a princess or a Karen you could make the case that it is just a person who is that picky.
I am not. But I don’t see a way to be employable and healthy in science (the only pursuit I think makes sense for me - as bleak as the employment landscape is today)

I was so disgusted at this whole needless thing. I thought over and over again that I could have recovered. I could have fixed my work. I could have made use of my own personal resources as an only child with parents who were honest public servants with decent pensions and benefits.
But this parasitic stuff and the theatre/

It is not when you anger a Karen or snob that it is a warning sign. It is when you anger a frumpy catlady who mostly just tries to avoid this bullshit. Yes I continue to care about the planet and factory farming etc. Those are not non issues. Always arguing about puerile bs is a non issue.

I am filing complaints and pressing charges the day I can.
Till then I will continue to ignore this when possible and carry on with completing a paper that is a follow up to a paper I wrote with mentor who was not given to heavy handed micromanagement that results in this sort of worthless stuff. It was not a good paper.
I do not need or respect Fanelli, RetractionWatch or Elizabeth Bik (who strikes me as a disgruntled person). The rates of fraud in academic publiclt funded science are low. Fraud that is covered up by al of the contemporary and useless technology sector is a poisonous sloppy nuisance.
Petty and autocratic policing is an able ally of lawlessness and fraud.

I self police and file complaints when the nuisance, misogyny and harassment get to this level. I do care about labor and environmental laws and women’s rights and I do not want pronatalist and religious thinking to force me into mobs.

That is all. I did not find this amusing and I am not even uptight.
